[1]Coeur d’Alene (pronounced core-da-lane), the once-upon- a-time 1870’s outpost for Fort Sherman is now a thriving mini- metropolis with all the amenities of a large cosmopolitan city. Sitting pretty on Lake Coeur d’Alene’s north shore, distinctive northwest shops, antique stores, casual and gourmet restaurants, and art galleries, flavor this romantic retreat along with a vibrant waterfront with beaches, parks, public docks, cruise boat rides, & the opportunity to walk on the world’s longest floating boardwalk which stretches more than 3,000 feet into the lake at the award- winning Coeur d’Alene Resort. The carousel that sat near the shore of Lake Coeur d’Alene along the old Playground Pier for three decades and then mysteriously disappeared in the 1970’s has returned. The now restored 20 horse Merry-Go-Round is open for business May through October next to Memorial Field. What’s with the funny name? Early French explorers in the late 18th or early 19th century, impressed by the local Indians’ sharp trading practices, proclaimed they possessed hearts (Coeur) like an awl (d’Alene) – a sharp tool used to pierce and sew leather. In the ancient tribal language, members call themselves, "Schitsu'umsh," meaning "The Discovered People" or "Those Who Are Found Here." Locals now abbreviate Coeur d’Alene, writing it as CdA. Coeur d’Alene, a progressive city that attracts commerce and growth, still retains its local charm, and more importantly, has made preserving its open spaces and well-groomed trails and paths in and around the town a top priority. A multimillion-dollar makeover of the 20- acre McEuen Field on Front Ave. is a must see. Amenities include a play area, tennis and basketball courts, an off-leash area for dogs, community gathering areas and an interactive splash pad with more than a dozen colorful water features. McEuen Park, often referred to as McEuen Field and once Playfield has had a number of transformations, it was once home to a sawmill, and then, duringWorldWar II, a tract of small cottages. It even served a stint as the Kootenai County Fairgrounds.
